What are antibiotics?
Antibiotics are medicines used to treat infections caused by bacteria. They work by killing bacteria or stopping them from spreading.
They do not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.
Important
Antibiotics are only prescribed when they are needed. Taking them when not required can make them less effective in the future.
